REVIEW: DSTRKT, London

Review of DSTRKT club and restaurant, Leicester Square

I don't often go out in the Leicester Square area - while I'm in London quite a bit, I tend to shy away from the super busy, touristy parts, apart from the occasional visit to Oxford Street because I gots to have my H&M Home, y'know? So when I was asked to review the food at DSTRKT, I was intrigued - it's really not in one of my usual haunts. DSTRKT is a club with a restaurant attached, and they've been making more of their food lately, so I headed along with a friend to see what was on offer.

We were presented with a tasting menu to try, which was designed to be shared. Now, looking at their website, they place quite a big focus on seafood and sushi, which I don't eat. This meant that our menu was fish-free, and if I'm honest it was a little underwhelming. Perfectly nice, but very much a 'party food' menu that I've had many times before.

We started with edamame, covered with sea salt, then vegetarian spring rolls with sweet chilli sauce, then chicken satay sticks. These were all nicely cooked and tasty, but as I said, not exactly groundbreaking.

Next up were mini cheeseburgers, which were juicy and cheesy and everything I want in a mini cheeseburger, to be honest. Although they did come with my pet hate in sharing platters - an odd number. It's always baffling to me why restaurants serve something for two and don't consider equal portions. Please portion your food equally and responsibly, world.

Our mains finished with some pasta and some gnocci. The spinach ravioli was rich, buttery and creamy and the gnocci was cheesy and delicious. However, they were a slightly odd, messy choice for a sharing dish - we both ended up with sauce splattered all over the table in front of us. These were the best courses that we had, but I think they could have been a bit better thought out.

We finished with a delicious white chocolate cheesecake, with a side of berries, which was fluffy and tasted amazing.

Our meal at DSTRKT was nice, but I don't know if we necessarily saw the best of it as we couldn't judge on their sushi selection. As it was, everything we ate was just okay, and I'd hesitate to recommend it when there are so many genuinely great restaurants in London. It very much felt like we were sitting down to eat a menu of canapes, and I feel like there's a time and a place for canapes. It was all cooked well and tasted good, but it wasn't very imaginative and nothing that I haven't tried before. But if you're looking for a light meal before a night out, DSTRKT could be perfect, as presumably you could then head straight into the club afterwards.

DSTRKT is at 9 Rupert St, London W1D 6DG. The restaurant kindly paid for our meal in return for this honest review.
